Life in Ancient Rome
The Resource: Video clip of life in Ancient Rome
Description: This is a short youtube clip about life in Ancient Rome told through the eyes of a ten year old boy. The boy tells the viewer about his life in Ancient Rome focusing on food, soldiers, entertainment, houses, family life and school. Via: www.youtube.com Teaching Ideas: -Children could watch the clip as an introduction to life in Ancient Rome. -This clip could also be used as revision after doing a project on Ancient Rome, where children must answer questions based on their projects on life in Ancient Rome and the video clip. -Children could compare their lives now with the boy living in Ancient Rome focusing on food, pets, clothes, houses and school. -Children could use the clip as a stimulus and do a mini-project in groups focusing on an aspect of life in Ancient Rome such as clothes, buildings, school, food and entertainment. -Children could write their own story or diary entry as a child living in Ancient Rome. If I was to teach this it would be important to plot the era of Ancient Rome on a timeline. It would be important to discuss the video clip and compare it with our lives today. I would use high order questioning to encourage high order thinking. For group work it would be important to have the information needed for each mini-project for the groups ready in advance. Each child would have to be given a role in the group and be reminded of the rules for group work when working together. It would be important that each child gets a turn doing each role e.g. illustrator, team leader, researcher, reporter and recorder. Curriculum Linkage: English: Report writing, diary entries, Project writing History: Change and continuity, Project on life in Ancient Rome Visual Arts: Make a comic strip of an event in Ancient Rome, Illustrate project Music: Compose a piece of music inspired by the sounds of Ancient Rome |
