Volcanoes: Pompeii and the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius
Resource 1: Powerpoints on Volcanoes and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii
Description: The first powerpoint aims to inform the child about volcanoes; what a volcano is, the types of volcanoes, and the types of eruptions. It also discusses recent volcano eruptions (Mount Etna and Grímsvötn). This second powerpoint explains the story of Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius highlighting the key information and events for children. Via: I adapted these powerpoints from Slide Share to suit the children's individual needs. Teaching Ideas: Powerpoint 1: -Children could label the parts of a volcano on a diagram. -Children identify different volcanoes on a map. They could fill in a comprehension based around the language of volcanoes. -Children could research a volcano and do a mini-project on it -Children could write a news report on a volcano erupting e.g. Mount Etna -Children could discuss the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and its impact on Pompeii Powerpoint 2: -Children could answer questions on life in Ancient Rome using evidence from looking at the power-point on Pompeii -Children could write a diary entry as a survivor of Pompeii -Children could engage in role play as a news reporter and a survivor of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. -Children could write a newspaper report about Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. If I were teaching this topic I would ensure not to overload the children with too much information in the one lesson. I would ensure that the children know where Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius are on the map of Italy. I would have done previous work on volcanoes with the class before introducing this topic. It would be important to plot the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on our History Timeline. |
