Science Experiment: Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano
The Resource: Video of Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano Experiment
Description: This is a video of 3 primary school students carrying out an experiment to replicate a volcanic eruption by mixing baking soda and vinegar. Via: www.primaryscience.ie Teaching Ideas/ activities: -Children could be given materials ecuh as cardboard, paper, paint, coloured markers/crayons, clay, plastic bottle and have to design their own volcano in groups. -Children could discuss the different volcanos made in class noting shape, desing and materials used. -Using a guided discovery method chidlren could mix different ingredients to make a volcanic eruption using food dye, baking soda and vinegar. -Children could predict, experiment and record results of what might happen when they use different amounts of baking soda and vinegar. If I was doing this experiment I would get the children to add diluted food dye to make the 'eruption' easier to see the results. Curriculum Linkage: Science: Mixing Materials, Designing and making a volcano History: Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius Geography: Location of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in Italy Visual Arts: Design the volcano.
