Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
Resource: Classics for Kids: Vivaldi
Description: This website aims to educate the child about the life of Vivaldi. The pdf file has activities for the piece 'Spring' from 'The Four Seasons' focusing on mood, dynamics and instrumentation instrumentation. Via: http://www.classicsforkids.com/composers/bio.asp?id=61 Teaching Ideas: -Children could make a word map of things they associate with Spring -Children could discuss how the music represents Spring -In small groups children could compose their own piece inspired by The Four Seasons (Children could be in 4 groups to represent each season) -Children could combine all the groups compositions to make a class composition -Children could discuss and reflect on the composition created and compare it with Vivaldi's interpretation of The Four Seasons - Children could draw a picture or write a story inspired by the music -Children could identify the different instruments and dynamics used in 'Spring' If I were to teach this lesson I would make sure that the children are able to identify the different instrument families of the orchestra and have a strong understanding of dynamics. I would get the children to listen to a short excerpt from 'Spring' and would discuss it with them to keep them engaged in the lesson. If children were composing it would be important that each group has enough space so they can hear their own groups work when composing e.g. might be useful to have one/two groups in another room. Curriculum Linkage:
Geography: Identify where Vivaldi lived on a map of Italy English: Compose a poem or story about Spring Visual Arts: Draw a picture/comic strip to represent 'Spring' History: Italian Musicians and the Italian Opera |
